Practical cigar guidance

Cigar care

Simple guidance for storing, preparing and choosing cigars, whether you are buying your first cigar or looking after an established collection.

Storage

Keep cigars in good condition

Cigars respond to their surroundings. A stable humidor protects them from drying out, becoming brittle or taking on too much moisture.

  • Aim for steady conditions rather than frequent changes.
  • Keep the humidor away from radiators, direct sunlight and cold draughts.
  • Use a calibrated hygrometer and check it regularly.
  • Allow newly delivered cigars time to settle before smoking.

Many cigar smokers keep a humidor near 65 to 72% relative humidity. The best setting can vary with the cigars, the humidor and personal preference, so consistency matters more than chasing a single reading.

Preparation

Cutting and lighting

Check that the wrapper is intact, then remove only the closed cap at the head of the cigar. A clean, decisive cut helps create an even draw without damaging the wrapper.

  1. Hold the cigar securely and make a shallow cut above the cap line.
  2. Warm the foot gently without pressing it into the flame.
  3. Rotate the cigar while lighting so the edge begins to glow evenly.
  4. Take slow, measured draws and allow the cigar to burn at its own pace.

If the burn becomes uneven, a small touch-up is usually enough. Avoid overheating the cigar with repeated or prolonged flame.

How to sample cigars

Sampling cigars is much like trying a box of assorted chocolates. You are not committed to one filling or recipe, but are discovering what suits your taste.

A cigar sampler brings different cigars together in one pack, making it a practical way to compare brands, origins, strengths and formats. Samplers can also make useful gifts for adult cigar smokers when you are unsure which individual cigar to choose.
