Crafted by Nicholas Melillo, the Foundation Olmec Claro Toro is a refined tribute to the Olmecs—widely regarded as the world’s earliest cigar smokers. This cigar blends ancient inspiration with modern mastery, delivering balance, elegance, and depth in equal measure.
Founded in 2015, Foundation Cigar Company represents Melillo’s lifelong devotion to tobacco. After more than two decades shaping the modern cigar landscape—including his influential years at Drew Estate—Melillo set out to create cigars rooted in history, authenticity, and uncompromising quality. The Olmec line stands as one of his most celebrated achievements.
The Olmec Claro takes its inspiration from the tropical lowlands of present-day Veracruz, Tabasco, and San Andrés Tuxtla—regions once inhabited by the Olmecs and now famed for producing exceptional San Andrés Negro wrapper tobacco. This ancient seed varietal, grown in rich volcanic soil, is among the oldest still cultivated today.
For this Claro expression, the San Andrés Negro wrapper is slow-fermented at low temperatures, a technique pioneered by Melillo to preserve natural oils and subtle complexity. Beneath the wrapper lies a core of premium Nicaraguan filler tobaccos from Estelí and Jalapa, meticulously fermented and bale-aged for three years before rolling.
The result is a cigar that showcases San Andrés tobacco in a uniquely refined way—light to medium in body, impeccably balanced, and remarkably smooth, offering depth without heaviness.
Highly sought after worldwide, the Olmec line has earned major acclaim, including Cigar Snob’s Cigar of the Year and a place in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 of 2023.
Smooth white pepper and charred oak open the profile, evolving into nutmeg, cacao, and light espresso. A subtle malty grain runs throughout, finishing with gentle minerality, earth, and leather.
