Brand Story
The story of Matilde Cigars is deeply rooted in Dominican cigar history and the remarkable career of master blender José Seijas.
José’s journey in premium tobacco began in 1974 when he joined Consolidated Cigar Corporation, where he quickly developed a deep understanding of tobacco sorting, selection and processing. His passion and expertise would later take him to some of the most respected cigar operations in the world, including La Compania Insular Tabacalera in the Canary Islands and eventually Tabacalera de Garcia in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
Over decades in the industry, José Seijas became one of the most respected names in cigar blending, overseeing the production of globally recognised brands including Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann, VegaFina, Trinidad and many others. During his tenure, blends created under his leadership earned multiple placements in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 cigars.
The Revival of Matilde
Originally founded in 1876 in Santiago de los Caballeros, Matilde was one of the Dominican Republic’s earliest tobacco companies before disappearing in the early 1900s.
Following his retirement in 2011, José Seijas returned to cigar making with a new vision — producing cigars on a smaller scale with complete focus on quality, craftsmanship and carefully selected tobaccos. Together with his sons Enrique and Ricardo, he revived the historic Matilde brand in 2014 as a tribute to Dominican cigar heritage.
Their first release, Matilde Renacer — meaning “rebirth” — symbolised both the return of the historic brand and José’s new chapter in cigar making. The blend received a 92-point rating and earned a place in Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2014.
