The story begins in the tropical lowlands of modern-day Veracruz, Tabasco, and San Andrés Tuxtla, regions once inhabited by the Olmecs and now celebrated for producing some of the world’s finest San Andrés Negro wrapper tobacco. This ancient seed variety, grown in rich volcanic soil, is one of the oldest tobacco strains still cultivated today.

For the Olmec Claro, Melillo employs a distinctive approach to San Andrés Negro. The wrapper is slow-fermented at low temperatures, a technique he pioneered when introducing San Andrés tobacco to the premium cigar world in the early 2000s. This careful process preserves the wrapper’s natural oils and nuance, resulting in a profile that is light to medium in body, remarkably balanced, and notably refined—an uncommon expression of this typically bold leaf.

Beneath the wrapper lies a core of Nicaraguan filler tobaccos from Estelí and Jalapa, meticulously fermented and bale-aged for three years before rolling. The result is a cigar of exceptional harmony and elegance, one that showcases complexity without overwhelming the palate.
